Wayson Poon delivered a guest lecture to the master’s students at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, sharing his curatorial approach in developing his contemporary dance creative project PHONATE. Evolving from dance movement research into an ensemble performance and later an interactive exhibition, PHONATE reimagines how performance archives can be transformed into living, participatory experiences for the public — extending the life and resonance of an artwork beyond the stage.
During the lecture, Poon generously shared practical insights on sustaining an artistic practice — from gathering resources and building partnerships, to leveraging artist-in-residence programmes and government funding opportunities to support long-term creative development. His talk offered students both inspiration and pragmatic guidance on navigating the evolving landscape of contemporary performance-making.
