Choreographer Wayson Poon to dance to Cannes “best screenplay”

Upcoming local choreographer and dancer Wayson Poon will perform with theatre and dance artists from Beijing and Hong Kong when presenting his latest work, “Behind 3.0”, in February.

“Behind 3.0” is adapted from controversial Mainland film “Spring Fever” (or “Legend”), which won the Best Screenplay at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival. Gay or straight, people fall in love in the city. Some play by the rules, others choose to take a step further and explore the bounds of morality. This production is an attempt to explore the body and its physical movements within the framework of the script. It will bring to the audience a totally new perspective on love in the city.

Wayson Poon graduated from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, where he majored in contemporary dance. During his studies he was awarded a scholarship by the American Dance Festival to attend training in the US. Poon has since worked with various arts groups including Hong Kong Dance Company, Hong Kong Ballet, City Contemporary Dance Centre (CCDC) and the Royal Ballet (UK). He has also performed in “Desperately Seeking Miss Blossom” by Mui Cheuk-yin, “Split/ Screen” by Australian Choreographer and “‘Til Death Do Us Part” by New Zealand’s Raewyn Hill. In addition to the US, Poon has also studied dance in Guangzhou, Taipei, Vienna and London. In 2010, Poon co-founded the dance company SMX Studio with Xie Shu. He co-produced “Lines” (working title) with renowned contemporary painter, Liu Wentao, was the Staging Director of “Avatar’s Tree”, and Rehearsal Director for the contemporary dance drama, “Hysteria”.

“Behind 3.0” by Wayson Poon is one of the attractions of the “New Force in Motion Series” presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. It will be staged at 8pm on February 11 and 12 (Friday and Saturday), and at 4pm on February 12 and 13 (Saturday and Sunday), at the Black Box Theatre, Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre. Tickets priced at $160 are now available at all URBTIX outlets, on Internet and by telephone credit card booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients (limited tickets for CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis). A 10% discount applies to ticket purchase with “New Force in Motion Series: Right Here, Right Now by Rebecca Wong”. A group booking discount is also available.
