About Step ‘n Marching Arts Programme

The Step ‘n Marching Arts Programme is a performing arts program in Hong Kong that offers training in marching band disciplines. Organized by Buzz Marching Arts Limited, its goal is to create a professional marching band with a Hong Kong style. The program was launched with a grant from the Hong Kong government’s Arts Capacity Development Funding Scheme.
Key features of the program include:

– Integrated training: It focuses on skill development in wind instruments and percussion, combined with body performance techniques to create a blended “music and movement” art form.
– Advanced instruction: Participants learn modern marching band teaching methods, arrangement, and how to create new performances.
– Public performance: The program culminates in a public marching band show where participants can showcase their talents.
– Professional development: A primary objective is to cultivate semi-professional artist-educators (ζΌ”ζ•™δΊΊε“‘) over an 18-month period, creating a new generation of talent.
– Recruitment: The program actively recruits young musicians to become part of a professional marching band.

Hong Kong contemporary dance artist Wayson Poon has designed a specialized curriculum for the Step n’ Marching Arts programme, providing aspiring marching arts instructors with expert training in choreography and physical movement. The course utilizes improvisation technology and movement tools to enhance the musicians’ spatial awareness and body coordination skills, enabling them to perform expressive movements while playing their instruments. This unique integration of musical and physical artistry develops foundational abilities necessary for large-scale stage positioning and movement, empowering musicians to navigate complex routes and formations with precision. Through tailored body training and performance coaching, the curriculum boosts participants’ confidence and stage presence, preparing them to excel as both teachers and performers in the contemporary marching arts scene.
